ViRBO currently hosts several SVN and git repositories on the local server at GMU. We are looking into moving these repositories to http://repositoryhosting.com as they offer many added-value services, including a web interface, back-ups, and a bug tracking system.

If you are interesting in having a radiation belt related codebase hosted at ViRBO, please send email to virbo@virbo.org.

Collection of tools for SPASE metadata

Hi all -

I'm pleased to announce the availability of a collection of tools for
purveyors of SPASE metadata. These tools were developed as part of the
VMO effort and we've packaged them for distribution to the community.

Full information about the toolkit is available at:

http://www.spase-group.org/tools/toolkit/

The toolkit includes the following:

Collator -Separate each SPASE resource description in a file into a
separate file stored in a folder tree according to the Resource ID.

Downloader - Obtains a list of URLs associated with a resource by
querying a registry server, then downloads and packages all the source
files. The collection of files is packaged into a zip file and written
to the output file.

Profiler

Profile generator. Create resource profiles for SPASE resource descriptions.
Profiles all have a common schema which can be used in a solr search engine.

Validator - SPASE Resource Description grammar checker. Checks a resource description for compliance to a specified version of the SPASE data model.

RefCheck - SPASE Resource Description reference checker. Can check both resource identifiers and URLs for referential integrity. Can also produce lists of identifiers and URLs.

XMLGrep - XML Parser, XPath generator and search tool. Parses an XML
file and flattens the document content. Values can be retrieved using
an XPath that can contain regular expressions. All values in the XML
file can be listed with a corresponding XPath.

The workshop website has been update with logistical information for those who are unfamiliar with the UMBC campus. Maps, parking information, and workshop location information can be found at http://essi.gsfc.nasa.gov/logistics/

Additionally, the proceedings page ( http://essi.gsfc.nasa.gov/proceedings.html ) has been updated with information regarding the special issue of the journal Earth Science Informatics. We encourage all presenters to submit full manuscripts of their work to this special issue. In order to make the submission and peer-review process as efficient as possible we ask that authors begin preparing their papers according to the details posted. A follow up email will be sent in the coming weeks once the special issue is ready for submission. Please DO NOT submit your manuscript at this time as they will be assigned to the next issue of the journal and not the special issue.

Thank you,
ESSI Program Committee

VHO/VMO SPASEQL API Available For Testing

The VMO and VHO/VEPO now have SPASEQL APIs available for testing. Source code and examples can be found at: http://spaseql.gsfc.nasa.gov/services/vho-vmo/

The examples show a range of questions that can be asked via SPASEQL. Additionally, the same query can be sent to multiple VxOs by changing command line options. The results come back in standard SPASEQL format which should facilitate easy intersections and unions.

Please note that currently the VHO and VMO web sites have not been connected to these new SPASEQL interfaces. For the time being they are only available via the Java code. Also, more complex queries, which are supported by SPASEQL, are currently not implemented yet.

I’d appreciate any comments or criticism from those that test the interfaces.

What is SPASE?

ViRBO uses the SPASE model to create metadata for its data holdings. At its most basic level you can think of SPASE as a structure way to create a README file for your data. For example, suppose you devised a new solar sunspot index. If you created a SPASE record for the data associated with your index it would show up when another scientist did a search on "Solar Index Data" (after you let a SPASE search engine know of the SPASE record you created).

But SPASE was develop to much more. See http://www.spase-group.org for more information.

Radiation Belt Climatology Group Meeting at GEM

GEM FG on Space Radiation Climatology

Focus Group Topic Description: Climatology is typically defined as the study of the long-term (seasonal, decadal, etc.) variability of the atmosphere, as opposed to weather, which is typically defined as the short term variations associated with storms, fronts, air masses, etc. There is a direct analogy in space weather and space climate, and it influences how we pursue knowledge about the space environment. Space weather is often pursued in the form of observations and physics-based simulations of individual storm events, while space climate has, until recently, been characterized almost exclusively by long-term empirical studies.
