1. ViRBO/GEM Focus Group Interaction

In the past ViRBO worked with GEM FG 9

  • See
  • Hosted presentation notes (can do so for the Radiation belt and wave modeling ... but volunteers are needed to actually write the notes.)
  • Provided access to presentations (before GEM Wiki was available; users encouraged to upload presentations; can do so for this Focus Group)
  • Created climatology data sets (Based on group request. Data included aggregated data for the AMIE runs, 2005 Tsyganenko inputs, O’Brien’s RB climatology data set, and more, in a various file formats.)
  • Took user requests for new data sets (Many examples, but one is that they, have feed back request for ability to do compute-intensive field line traces to CCMC. This is not something ViRBO can do, but we can work as a liaison to other entities in the data environment, including CCMC, CDAWeb, etc. Similar requests have been made to SSCWeb regarding requirements for orbit calculations for field line tracing codes.).

ViRBO will work with GEM Focus Groups on

Finding a way to simplify data-related research including help with

  • Finding data (The ViRBO web page contains both pointers to data sets and information about data sets. It is continually being updated when a new data set or data product of interest to the RB community is found.)
  • Accessing data (We work closely with other data providers and data servers, and can usually help you find a way to more easily access data. The virtual observatories are intended to simplify the process of finding information and data. This requires feedback from users about when and why they had difficulties.)
  • Creating metadata for your new data sets so that they will appear in search (As the number of “derived data products” (data compilations, indices, climatological runs) increases, so does the importance of allowing your data to be found in a search.)

There are a limited number of things ViRBO can do, but often

  • they know of simple solutions to your data problems
  • can point you to a new service that will help you solve the problem

and they aways want to know about how data are being used and what the “Heliophysics Data Environment” can do to help.
